COGTA PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE PROBES LEARNER READMISSION AND RIGHTS AT COSMO CITY SECONDARY SCHOOL
The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), led by Acting Chairperson, Honourable Ntsako Mogobe, will conduct an urgent oversight visit to Cosmo City Secondary School on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
The Committee has also received reports that SABC journalists covering the matter were intimidated and threatened by the school principal while attempting to report on the story. The Committee regards any form of intimidation directed at media personnel carrying out their constitutional mandate as a serious matter requiring urgent attention.
The Committee will use the visit to establish the facts and to assess whether the school’s conduct is consistent with the Constitution, including the right to a basic education under Section 29 and the right to participate in the cultural life of one’s choice under Section 30 of the Bill of Rights.
The Committee underscores its oversight role in ensuring that schools operate within the law, that no learner is unlawfully excluded from education, and that cultural and traditional practices are respected in line with the Bill of Rights.
