Mama Mary Twala-Mhlongo who was 80 years old, passed on during this difficult period of the pandemic. Mama in her decades long career, was an enduring force in local productions, and has been nominated for various awards, including in the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting role in 2011.

Mama Twala-Mhlongo was also among the senior citizens President Cyril Ramaphosa bestowed with the 2019 National Orders Awards. The Arts and Culture Sector in Gauteng and South Africa has lost an icon.

On behalf of the Gauteng Arts, Culture and Creative Industries Community we want to send our deepest condolences to the Twala and Mhlongo families. Mama Mary Twala-Mhlongo will forever be remembered for the role she played in putting our Province and South Africa in the global arena during the difficult times of apartheid.  She used Arts to tell our stories during those difficult times said Chairperson William Matsheke.

To the families of Twala and Mhlongo especially to his son Somizi Mhlongo thank you for sharing her with us, we will forever cherish her role.
