The Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), Ms. Morakane Mosupyoe, in collaboration with the Office of the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Johannesburg and Reamogetswe Khaya Disability & Outreach, will host a Cerebral Palsy Awareness Walk and Wheelchair Donation Programme on Wednesday, 06 May 2026, at Reamogetswe Khaya in Atteridgeville, Tshwane.

This initiative seeks to advance social inclusion, strengthen community-based support systems, and improve the quality of life for persons living with disabilities, particularly children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). As part of the programme, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will donate 50 food hampers and the Office of the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Johannesburg will donate wheelchairs to Reamogetswe Khaya Disability & Outreach, contributing essential assistive devices that enhance mobility, independence, and dignity for beneficiaries.

The programme will commence with a 15 to 20-minute Cerebral Palsy Awareness Walk, with participants wearing green and white, the globally recognised colour for CP awareness. The walk aims to increase public understanding of cerebral palsy, promote early diagnosis and intervention, advocate for accessibility and inclusion, reduce stigma and discrimination, encourage research and funding, and provide support to individuals living with the condition and their families.

Reamogetswe Khaya Disability & Outreach is a community-driven organisation dedicated to uplifting underprivileged communities, with a particular focus on individuals living with disabilities. Inspired by the lived experience of its founder’s son, Reamogetswe Khaya Mabitsela, who was diagnosed with Level 4 cerebral palsy, the organisation has committed itself to improving the lives of children with similar conditions. Since its inception, it has made significant progress in providing care, support, and advocacy, and is currently in the process of establishing a Disability Outreach Centre and a Cerebral Palsy Stimulation Centre.

Cerebral palsy is a neurological condition that affects movement, posture, and muscle coordination, and remains one of the most common physical disabilities in children. According to the World Health Organization, millions of people worldwide live with various forms of disability, including cerebral palsy. This programme seeks to raise awareness, promote inclusion and dignity for persons with disabilities, and strengthen community understanding of the lived realities, needs, rights, and potential of individuals living with cerebral palsy.

The event will also feature educational workshops, panel discussions, testimonies from individuals living with cerebral palsy and their caregivers, free screening and health information services, assistive device demonstrations, and cultural performances that promote disability inclusion. These activities aim to empower families and communities, strengthen partnerships between government, healthcare providers, and civil society, and increase the visibility of disability rights advocacy.

This initiative underscores the GPL’s commitment to building inclusive communities that recognise, respect, and uphold the rights of persons with disabilities, while strengthening international cooperation and community partnerships that contribute to social development and improved quality of life.
