The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), as an independent organ of state, fulfils its constitutional mandate by ensuring that diverse stakeholder needs across Gauteng are prioritized in governance and service delivery. Through initiatives such as Sector Parliaments, including the Women’s Parliament, the GPL engages communities to identify challenges and ensure the Executive Council responds effectively as part of its service delivery obligations.

Over the past decade, the awards have become a flagship recognition programme, honouring women whose leadership, resilience, and service have transformed communities. Under the Speaker’s leadership, the awards highlight the Legislature’s dedication to gender equality and inclusive development, offering a prestigious platform that inspires future generations of women and girls to drive positive change.

As part of the annual Women’s Month programme, the Honourable Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) honours women across Gauteng who have made meaningful contributions towards empowering others in society.
Each year in August, the GPL’s Multi-Party Women’s Caucus leads the Annual Vita Basadi Awards – an initiative that recognises excellence among women in various fields of work, as well as acts of service to those in need.
Through these awards, the Speaker celebrates women of courage who continue to make a positive impact in their communities.
