SCOPA BRINGS KEY GAUTENG STAKEHOLDERS TOGETHER TO STRENGTHEN MUNICIPAL AUDIT OUTCOMES.

On Thursday, 27th August; the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will convene a stakeholder engagement workshop aimed at strengthening municipal audit action plans and oversight, with a particular focus on addressing recurring audit findings and improving audit outcomes across the province.

Themed “Strengthening Municipal Audit Action Plans and Oversight for Improved Audit Outcomes in Gauteng”, the Workshop will bring together key institutions responsible for supporting, monitoring and overseeing municipalities. These include the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA), Gauteng Provincial Treasury, Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), and Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPACs).

The Auditor-General will provide insight into recurring findings, their root causes, audit recommendations and expectations for effective corrective action, while Gauteng Provincial Treasury will address interventions to strengthen municipal financial management and improve audit outcomes.

The Department of CoGTA will focus on municipal support, governance and institutional interventions to address audit findings, while SALGA will outline its role in supporting municipalities to improve their audit outcomes.

The engagement will further provide an opportunity for MPAC leadership and members to engage directly with provincial and sector stakeholders on challenges affecting municipal accountability and the implementation of corrective measures.

The workshop is expected to strengthen a shared understanding of the systemic challenges contributing to recurring audit findings and identify practical areas for improved coordination, support and oversight. Through this engagement, SCOPA seeks to strengthen the collective response to municipal audit findings, support more effective implementation of audit action plans, and ensure that corrective measures translate into measurable and sustained improvements in municipal audit outcomes, accountability and financial management.
