The Speaker of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Honourable Ntombi Mekgwe hereby announces the 4th Official Opening of the 5th of the GPL to be held in Green Hills Stadium at the Rand West Local Municipality (Randfontein) on Monday, 20 February 2017.
This year’s event will mark four years of GPL taking parliament to the people and ensuring the citizens of Gauteng take keen interest in GPL’s processes. The Official Opening has previously been held in different regions of Gauteng including Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng. The Official Opening is one of the important events in the Legislature’s calendar and provides a platform for the Premier of Gauteng to deliver the State of the Province Address (SOPA). The Opening will be followed by a debate and reply sessions to be held on Thursday, 23 and Friday, 24 February 2017. Watch the Opening live here.
The theme for the Official Opening is “Following up on GPL’s commitment of taking parliament to the people of Gauteng”. The Official Opening is expected to be attended by over 2000 stakeholders which includes executive mayors, local municipality mayors and councillors in Gauteng, members of the diplomatic corps, leaders of business, members of the media and members of the public.
The venue – Greenhills Stadium in Randfontein – has the distinction of having also the hosted the area’s IEC centre during South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. It is fitting that the event be held here on the twentieth anniversary of South Africa’s constitution.
