FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GPL LEADS EFFORTS TO RESPOND TO DAILY PLIGHT OF WIDOWS, WIDOWERS, AND CHILDREN LEADING HOUSEHOLDS

This Thursday, 24 August 2023, the Chairperson of Committees, Honourable Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, will launch her province-wide series of roadshows that aim to educate widows, widowers, and children heading households about social support services that they can access.

This intervention intends to raise awareness among this societal group in response to the consequences of the abject poverty, inequality, and unemployment under which they live.

Social services experts report that the Covid-19 pandemic saw South Africa record an unprecedented death rate among household breadwinners, leaving behind many homes in the hands of widows, widowers, and underage children with little-to-no-means of sustenance.

As an organization whose mandate includes fostering cooperative governance and rallying various sectors behind the common cause of improving the quality of life of all residents, the GPL will deliver this campaign in partnership with public and private sector partners. These include the Department of Home Affairs, the Deeds Office, Indigent & Social Development municipal offices, Master of High Court, Legal Services, and insurance companies.

They will inform communities about the standard services and support that can be accessed by the needy to rescue them from their plight.

Members of the media are invited to cover the launch event, scheduled as follows:

Date:               Thursday, 24 August 2023

Time:              9:30am

Venue:            Naledi Community Hall, Bona Street, Soweto.
