The scourge of violence against women, continues to be an ugly stain on our Society. The incident witnessed yesterday involving Bongekile Simelane and her partner Mandla Maphumulo via social media is testimony to the lived reality of many women, sadly often at the hands of their partners.

Accordingly, on behalf of the Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, I call upon all members of our society to condemn in the strongest possible terms this incident, along with the phenomenon of violence against women and children. We further call upon law enforcement agencies to pursue the matter thoroughly and diligently, and ensure that the perpetrator faces the full might of the Law.

We know all too well that this incident is also a manifestation of gender imbalances in our society, characterized by a dominance of patriarchy. We must therefore as men proclaim loudly and sincerely “NOT IN OUR NAME”.

We must therefore proclaim loudly and sincerely NOT IN OUR NAME

Dealing effectively with this scourge will require a societal approach, with men taking the lead in condemning patriarchy and violence at all levels of society, beginning in each of our Homes!
