Led by the Chairperson, Hon Sochayile Khanyile, the Legislature’s (GPL) Portfolio Committee on Community Safety will conduct oversight visits to three police stations in the Sedibeng area.

The oversight visits, scheduled for tomorrow (Friday, 9 September) are part of the Committee’s Focus Intervention Study , titled:

“An assessment of the Departmental support to Men as Safety Promoters (MASP), Women as Safety Promoters (WASP) and youth crime prevention desks and the functionality of these organizations as safety promoters in the Province of Gauteng”.

MASP and WASP are found within the Social Crime Prevention Unit at SAPS stations. The primary purpose of the unit is to provide professional and voluntary support services to victims of crime, especially gender-based violence, within Gauteng.

The study will:

  • Determine the role of MASP, WASP and youth crime prevention desks in ensuring the safety of the people of Gauteng.
  • Ascertain the effectiveness of these community structures in reducing crime.
  • Determine the type of support provided by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety to MASP, WASP and Youth Crime Prevention Desks.
  • Determine what partnerships these structures have with other community organizations dealing with safety and security such as CPF, SAPS, Metro police.
  • Assess the challenges that these structures face in carrying out their functions.
  • Determine what measures to put in place to address these challenges.
