This Thursday, 18 November 2021 at 10:00, GPL convenes the Senior Citizen’s Sector Parliament under the theme: ‘Listening to the voices of older persons amid the Coronavirus Pandemic’.

Senior Citizen’s Sector Parliament offers elder citizens of Gauteng a platform to debate existing policies that relate to their welfare. It also intends to enhance their quality of life through meaningful conversation with their elected representatives and the provincial executive. While the Sitting is convened by GPL on behalf of the Senior Citizen’s Sector, speakers and official on the day are chosen from people in the sector. GPL plays a critical role in ensuring that issues affecting Senior Citizens are addressed through the different Portfolio Committees such as Health, Social Development and Community Safety.

Topics to be discussed at this year’s Senior Citizen’s Sector Parliament include the following (see Order Paper for the full list):

  • Safety and security for older persons: an assessment of the safety programmes in dealing with risks associated with the collection of social grants.
  • Sports participation and positive development in older persons: an exploration of the programmes in place to encourage physical activity exercise among older persons.
  • Assessing the state of service centres and luncheon clubs during the Covid-19 pandemic.

While the speakers at the Parliament have already been locked in, you can take part in the Senior Citizens’ Sector Parliament. Tune in live on the GPL YouTube Channel and Facebook Page and join the discussions on those platforms. Your comment may be read live during the proceedings.
