Gauteng Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, led by the Chairperson Honourable William Matsheke wish to congratulate all nominees and winners of the Gauteng Sports Awards 2019.

The awards were held at Sandton Convention Centre on Sunday, 29 September 2019 and organized by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation under the leadership of MEC Mbali Hlophe in order to honor those that excelled in Sports in Gauteng for the previous year. The awards are meant to encourage those that are from the Province and residing in the Province to continue to promote Gauteng as a home of champions. The Committee further noted that these awards motivate our athletes in the province, even those that would not earn any income from their respective sport but doing it out of passion and love for their chosen sport. An 8-year-old chess player, Ms. Minenhle Miya made emotional waves from the crowd in the arena as she went on to receive her award as the Most Promising Athlete of the Year. This is a reflection that in Gauteng we nurture them young and the future looks bright.

Ms. Caster Mokgadi Semenya walked away with Sports Personality of the Year, against all odds, she continues to win as she is a natural born winner, and nothing and no one will take that from her as she remains our queen and in her we believe. She is the chosen one and her talent speaks volumes. We further want to congratulate Mme Ria Ledwaba for her lifetime achievement award, she has been the boss lady of soccer for many years and her contribution to soccer has been outstanding indeed the future looks female.

The Committee commends the department for making strides in ensuring that Gauteng continues and remains the Home of Champions and encourage private sector to join hands with those that are already supporting our athletes across the board.
