Media Statement: GPLs JOINT STATEMENT WITH SANEF REGARDING CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED BY MEDIA AT THE 2015 OPENING OF THE LEGISLATURE The South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) today requested an urgent meeting with the Gauteng ProvincialLegislature (GPL) following media reports that journalists were barred from the media gallery ahead of yesterdays State of the Province Address (SOPA). Led by the Honourable Speaker, Ntombi Mekgwe, GPLs delegation acknowledged theunfortunate incident and provided reasons for yesterdays challenges. The delegation appraised SANEF of the Legislatures venue capacity challenges which are a result of increased media interest in the work of the Institution. This has been the main cause of space challenges currently experienced at GPL galleries.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) under the theme: Consolidating and celebrating the gains of 20 years of democratic government in partnership with the LGBTI community in Gauteng will host its inaugural Sector Parliament for the Lesbian, Gays, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBT) society. This follows a Dialogue convened by the GPL in 2013, in an effort to reach out to this sector of society and foster inclusive governance. After the successful Dialogue, a House resolution was

On Thursday, 20 November 2014 the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will host a Thought Leadership Seminar as part of its ongoing 20 Years of Democracy Project. The Seminar is the first in a series of Thought Leadership Conversations to discuss GPLs constitutional mandates, with the objective of exchanging knowledge and formulating concrete ways to improve the current systems (implementation and effectiveness of Programme Evaluation and Budget Analysis/Sector Oversight Model) within the legislative sector.

GAUTENG LEGISLATURE HOSTS PROVINCIAL DIALOGUE FOR COMEMRCIAL SEX WORKERS-17NOVEMBER2014. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) will host the first ever Provincial Commercial Sex Workers Dialogue, having identified a need to introduce a platform to discuss challenges pertinent to this sector of society. This is part of GPL€™s efforts to respond to the plight of Commercial Sex Workers in Gauteng, as well as exploring interventions to ensure the protection of their human rights.

MEDIA ALERT: HEARING ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN GAUTENG. Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport will hold a public hearing on rail transport at Park Station in Johannesburg on Saturday 15 November at 11h00. The Committee, led by Chairperson Honourable Jacob Khawe, has invited rail commuters and other interested stakeholders to attend the public hearing to consider their views on the problems they face with rail transport in Gauteng. PRASA is expected to present their long and short term plans that are aimed at addressing these problems.

Media Release-SCOPA Annual Reports Hearings.Press Statement on the Hearings of the Gauteng Legislature Public Accounts Committee. The committee of Public Accounts in Gauteng will begin its hearings on the Annual Reports on Friday on the 24th October 2014 at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. The committee received a briefing from the Auditor General a fortnight ago and prepared questions to Departments to probe further issues that are still a concern to the committee.

Media Alert: GAUTENG LEGISLATURE CONVENES SECTOR PARLIAMENT FOR SENIOR CITIZENS. In 2011, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) convened the inaugural Sector Parliament for senior citizens with the intent to establish legitimate platforms for empowerment, promotion and maintenance of senior citizens status; rights; well-being; safety and security. On Thursday 16 October 2014, Chairperson Hon. Thuliswa Nkabinde, will lead the Social Development Portfolio Committee when it hosts GPL’s fourth annual Senior Citizens Parliament. This Sector Parliament is aimed at addressing issues pertaining to the wellbeing of Gauteng senior citizens.

Media Release-E-toll panel brief Roads and Transport portfolio committee. Portfolio Committee for Roads and Transport of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature was today briefed on the E-toll panel review programme of action. The Committee was informed that implementers such as SANRAL, Gauteng department of Roads and Transport and entities were asked to comment on the original socio-economic objectives of e-tolls and organized labour, business and civil society were requested to make inputs on the direct and indirect benefits and costs of the e-tolls.

Media Release: Gauteng Legislature spares no effort to prevent anarchy: Violent protests by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) aimed at disrupting the Tuesday Sitting of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) have resulted in malicious damage to State property. The Legislature is now doing an assessment of all damages to property, which include broken windows, doors and furniture within the building with an intention to file a civil lawsuit against the EFF to pay for damages.

Media Statement: Unbecoming conduct of EFF Members:Unbecoming conduct of EFF Members causes delays in the House sitting at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature sitting on the 01/07/2014: The House Sitting of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature convened today to consider the debate on the State of the Province Address was delayed by two hours as a result of Members of the EFF violating the Standing Rules of the House and being in contempt of the Presiding Officer, Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe who had requested them to leave the House on the basis of their contravention of the dress code as stipulated in the Rules.
