Shortly after the first democratic elections in 1994, it was announced that the Government of the Gauteng Province would move from Pretoria to Johannesburg and that the Gauteng Provincial Legislature would relocate its quarters to City of Gold.
This saw the official opening of the Johannesburg City Hall on the 21st October of 1995 as the new home for the Gauteng Provincial Legislature – a venue that is central in the Province and one that boasts an unparalleled social and political history of the country.
What is the Legislature about... The Gauteng Provincial Legislatures is one of nine (Provincial Legislatures) in the country, which are a product of extensive negotiations that gave shape to the 1996 Constitution. The Gauteng Provincial Legislature is empowered by the Constitution to make laws for Gauteng, oversee the work of the Provincial Government, and ensure that the peopleof the Province participate in matters of the running of their Province.
